This paper discusses the effect of web arrangement on the dynamic gear-tooth load in welded structure gears. The dynamic loads were measured under various running conditions by making use of a gear testing machine of power circulating type. The load distribution across the face width in the welded gears changes with running conditions, because the rim and web thicknesses are relatively small in welded gears, and the rate of increase in dynamic load with an increasing gear speed is smaller compared with the case of a comparable solid gear. A double web structure gear shows the smallest dynamic additional load of all types of web structure gears tested. Furthermore some points which must be taken into consideration in the practical design of welded gears are indicated.
