It is evident from authors investigations that induction hardening is the most effective method for increasing fatigue strength, especially of notched, and press-fitted parts such as axle. In order to investigate again many unsolved problems in the previous use of induction hardened axles for high speed cars, we examined fatigue strength by 7.5 t-m Cantilever Rotary Bending Fatigue Tester. The following informations are derived from these experiments. (1) By induction hardening, fatigue strength of press-fitted parts increases 3〜5 times over that by ordinary quenching and tempering method. (2) There are some vaque points about the value of maximum stress without crack in fatigue test, unless we have many data on press-fitted parts, but we think, the necessary hardening depth ought to be calculated by the above-mentioned method. (3) We could have many useful advices in applying induction hardening to axles of the New Tokaido Line Car.
