Effects of Surface Roughness on Shrinkage Fits

In the experiments of shrinkage fits, two specimens with flat surfaces of contact free from the effect of deviations in shape and a shaft and a ring as a pair were also used. It was clear from the experimental results that the surface roughness had a marked effect on the contact pressure, the thrust load and the coefficient of static friction for shrinkage fitted assemblies. Theoretical expressions for the effects of surface roughness on them were derived from the theories of the mechanism of contact and dry friction between two solid surfaces. A comparison of calculated values baced on these theories with experimental data showed good agreement. The results deduced from analysis and experiment showed that the contact pressure decreases but the coefficient of static friction increases with an increase of surface roughness. The thrust load did not necessarily increase with that.
