A seismic response analysis of a cylindrical liquid storage tank subjected to a horizontal seismic wave is made by the energy method in this paper. The kinetic and strain energies of an empty tank shell are calculated by the axisymmetric shell analysis computer code. On the other hand, the kinetic energy of the liquid in the tank is also calculated analytically by assuming that it follows the velocity potential theory neglecting the effect of the free surface oscillation. This solution coincides with others. Furthermore, it also coincides with the expreimental results which were reported in the former papers.
