The shape of bolt head was studied from the viewpoint of stress distribution by photoelastic method. The maximum stress was found at the connecting part of the head and the shank as we expected. Stress concentration was increased by about 30 per cent by changing the height of the head from the same dimension with the diameter of the shank to a half. By forming the top of the heads concave, the factor of stress concentration was increased. Those bolt head having convex top and conical seat inclined about 20 degrees, those heads connected to the shank with the radius 1^.5 times the diameter of the shank was the best form, and if the diameter of the shank is 0^.4 times the outside diameter of the thread, the factor of stress concentration became unity.
