Dynamic behavior of a rotor with a transverse crack is presented. Due to the open-close mechanism of a crack, the equations of motion of a rotor has parametric terms and nonlinear terms. Since the asymmetry of stiffness and the nonlinearity rotate with the shaft, the coefficients of linear and nonlinear terms become periodic functions of time. Due to these unique characteristics, various kinds of phenomena, such as the occurrence of unstable range at the major critical speed, occurrences of subharmonic, supersubharmonic and combination resonances, etc. occur. The result introduced in this lecture will serves the purpose of developing a monitoring system detecting cracks.
