(S2-1) Development and Applications of Microturbines

Recently in the US, attention has been paid to increasing the amount of power generated by distributed units. One major contributor will be microturbines; thus, in recent years, microturbine business and related research have grown considerably. One development area is the recuperator, which has not seen intensive activity since the years of automobile gas turbine development. Also, the small size of the microturbine has led to a preference for radial inflow turbines and a greater interest in ceramic components. The renewed interest in radial flow turbomachinery revealed a need to better understand the effects of flow streamline curvature. Finally, the small sizes have raised concerns about low Reynolds number effects, such as transition and flow separation, in both radial inflow and axial flow turbines. In this short report, we will review recent developments in these areas and comment on curvature and low Reynolds number research from our lab.
