The serum T_4 (thyroxine) level and T_4 response of thyroid gland to exogenous TSH of X-ray (8 Gy, whole-body, local thyroid gland and shielded thyroid gland) irradiated rats were studied on day 7 after irradiation. The whole-body and body without thyroid gland irradiation reduced the thyroid function significantly. The local irradiation of thyroid gland elevated the serum T_4 level, but it is reduced by exogenous (intravenous) endotoxin. Authors suppose that enteroendotoxemia developing during intestinal syndrome of radiation disease is one of the reasons for the lowering of the function of the thyroid gland.
