In the second report (J. Ceram. Assoc. Japan, 67 [7] 227 (1959)) the author has stated that the primary cause of the deterioration phenomenon of steatite bodies is the devitrification in the glass phase due to the transition during the cooling period of the phase equilibrium between the proto-enstatite and the melt established in the maturing period.The composition of the liquid or the glass phase is determined by the chemical composition of the body as well as the firing temperature. It may, therefore, be possible to indicate clearly the mechanism of deterioration if we know exactly the transition of phases occuring in the bodies of different composition.Investigations have been carried out to draw the equilibrium diagram of the system sanbornite-forsterite-silica which enables us to know precisely the process of the devitrification. It was confirmed that the major crystalline product of separation form glassphase is proto-enstatite which has the characteristic property of trans-forming easily even in the presence of glass-phase.It was thus established that the deterioration of steatite orginates mainly from the devitrification phenomenon.
