The gears, which are used in the nose-suspended motor of a motor car, necessarily come to mesh at the edge of face width on account of the mechanism of suspension for motor. This mechanism is often the cause of gear tooth failures. The author investigated this cause by experiments with a model, and from the result of the investigation has introduced a method of deciding the degree of crowning of gear as one of the counter measures against gear tooth failures. The outline of the results is as follows : (1) On the gear tooth with a beam whose width is far larger than its length, when the load is concentrated at its free edge, the maximum stress of fillet is not influenced by its beam width. (2) When the load is concentrated at the corner of the free edge of beam, the fillet stress at the end of built-in edge is quite large. And when it is concentrated at the middle part of the free edge, the maximum fillet stress arises at the fillet corresponding to the load. (3) The degree of crowning of gear should be decided quantitatively, based on the results of model test and considering the mechanism of power transmission of gear.
