Traction gears for electric cars are most important parts to transmit power for operation of cars, up to the present, their gears cracked or broke down very often in the nose suspension mechanism of traction motor. In order to make clear the state of gears in service, the author installed test gears on cars and made researches on the wear of traction gears in nose suspension mechanism and their conditions of action were clarified. From this starting point, the causes of troubles with gears were clarified, and the author drafted the countermeasure. The results of studies on the wear of traction gears thus obtained are as follows. (1) The amount of wear of traction gears depends upon the times of starts of an electric car from stations, and is not effected by the distance of running under power or the line on which the car is operated. Plastic deformations of gear tooth were observed on the test gears, whose hardness was from 45 S.H. to 55 S.H. (2) On the gears used in nose suspension type motors, a difference between the amount of decrease of tooth thickness at the middle of face width and that at the edge of face width was always observed. The maximum value of this difference was 0.44 mm. This phenomenon is the most important cause of the gear tooth trouble. (3) The amount of the decrease of tooth thickness on the pitch point at the middle of face width per one time of start of car from station was about 6×10^<-6> mm on pinions and about 3×10^<-6> mm on gears up to 300000 times of starting, and over 300000 times the degree of the decrease declined remarkably. The effects of the precision and the difference in finishing of tooth face were not evident at the test gears whose hardness was from 45 S.H. to 55 S.H.
