Effects of exogenous estrogen and progesterone on the fine structure of the oviduct epithelial cells of aged mice were described. In the epithelial cells of the ampulla of the aged (22-24 month-old) mouse oviduct, large autolysomes and vacuoles occur in both the ciliated cell and the secretory one, and the secretory granules almost disappear in the secretory cell. Estrogen injected stimulates the secretory cell to produce secretory granules, and progesterone injected prompts it to release them. However, no marked changes were recognized in the ciliated cell by exogenous sex steroid hormones administered. These reactions of the oviduct epithelial cells of aged mice to exogenous sex steroid hormones are quite similar to those of young animals. This fact suggests that the features of hypofunction and degeneration of the aged secretory cells are due to the deficiency of the ovarial steroid hormones and the cells have the ability to recover their activity if the exogenous hormones are given.
