The effects of Vita-X upon the growth of lactic acid bacteria have been studied, as compared with those of the beaf-hydrolyzate. (Lactic acid bacteria employed are Lactobacillus fermentarum, L. plantarum, Streptococcus thermophilus and Sc. faecalis.) Results obtained are summarized as follows. 1) Both Vita-X and the beaf-hydrolyzate always promoted the growth of all the lactic acid bacteria. 2) The actions of Vita-X and the beaf-hydrolyzate in promoting the growth of Sc. thermophilus, Sc. faecalis and L. fermentarum respectively were almost the same, and no remarkable difference was noted between them. 3) In case of L. plantarum, however, the growth-promoting action of Vita-X was much stronger than that of the beaf-hydrolyzate. Moreover, the curves of the growth of L. plantarum in Vita-X added to the basal culturemedia in various kinds of concentration were almost constant and unchangeable. Accordingly, the use of these curves will greatly contribute to the promotion and development of the study on Vita-X.
