Stability characteristics of a Iaminar natural convection flow above a horizontalline heat source are theoreticallv investiuated on the basis of the linear stabilitvtheory. The coupled Orr-Sommerfe[d equations are integrated numerically foranti-symmetric disturbances. The contours for various amplification rates areobtained in the Grashof number-wavenumber and the Grashof number-frequencydiagrams. The eigenfunctions for the velocity and temperature disturbances arealso calculated. Experiments are carried out for verifying the above-obtainedtheoretical results. All the experimental results are found to be in good agreementwith them. A phenomenon called swaying motion, which was already reported inprevious papers, seems to be explicable within the scope of the linear stabilitytheory developed in the present paper.
