On the Intermittency Feature of Shear Stress Fluctuation in Turbulence

Instantaneotns shear stress fluctuation is considered for different kinds of flow fields andReynolds ntrmbers. These fltrcttrations consist of intertaaittent sharp spikes and small scale oscillations around the zero-crossing. We introduce the rnaximum norna to characterize them. Thisnorm is defined as a largest change within a box of finite size. The experitnental restnlts indicatethat the IIl2lX1111UI11 norraa has a power law distribution in the inertial range. This distribtrtion isindependent of the flow field and tlae Reynolds nurnber. Analogous to the locally averaged energy dissipation rate, the intermuttency exponent jt is obtained for the maxinaurn norna. Withinexperimental scatter, we find 0.1< p< 0.15. This valtre is a little srnaller than that for theenergy dissipation field.
