By reexanuining the RPA electron self energy for a single band long range Cottlornb interactionmodel of electrons, we raise jhe possibility that in a umetal the electron-plasrnon interaction, which is the dominant ingredient of the RPA consequence, may drive a band to split into threewhen the plasma frequency, c;,?, is larger than the band width, W. The behavior of the bandsplitting is found to depend very sensitively on the unscreened exchange interaction betweenelectrons, U, besides u.), W, and the ntrmber of electrons per atom. We show that when U isuntrch larger than 11/, such band splitting may indttce a metal-insulator transition.
