Properties of a laser beaun propagating perpendicul?tr to the external magnetic field in a plasmaare investigated theoretically. The beataa is represented by a Helrnholtz equation in alunostall plasnaa paratneter space. For the upper hybrid wave region the xvave eqtzation ttmrns to ahyperbolic partial differerati?tl equation. It is shown that botla eqttations can be exactly solved bytrsing a rtaethod of separation of variables and that soltrtions having Gatrssian profiles lateral tothe propagation direction are obtained. An appreciable difl'erence betxveen two soltrtions appearsin their phase factors. Owing to tlae asyrnnaetry of tlue configtrration arotrnd tlue axis of xvavepropagation the cross sections of bean'xs take shapes of' ellipse and each lcearaa has txvo differentfocus points.
