Validity of the Franck-Condon approximation is experimentally examined for elec-tron-impact excitation of the C'77. state of N. molecule. The relative excitation cross-sections for associated vi brational levels up to v = 4 at an electron energy of 48 eV arederived with measuring the emission band intensities of the second positive system. The result is compared with the prediction by the approximation, and appreciablediscrepancies are found between them. In particular, the ratio (:I,=./ o,.=. of the crosssections obtained is by about a factor of two larger than the corresponding ratio ofthe Franck-Condon factors.[nitrogen molecule, excitation cross section, vibrational level, the Franck-Con- ll don factor, experimental studyl
