We present a diagonalization study of the two-impurity Anderson model, We ex-plore the competition between the Kondo effect and the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interactions. Over the entire range of the exchange coupling Jbetween two magnetic impurities, we evaluate the susceptibilities. We find that thetwo-impurity state smoothly changes from a triplet-like state to a singlet-like one withthe increase of J; there is a smooth crossover from small into large coupling. In orderto study this further, we consider the Anderson model with only even-parity-mixingterm. In this model, there is a critical point J.; the localized spins form a triplet forJ<J. and a singlet for J>J.. We also discuss, in the uaumerical diagonalization and avariational theory, the metamagnetic transition induced by the antiferromagnetic in-teractions in the two-impurity system.
