Dissociation of CH. and H.0 induced in collisions with electrons was investigatedby measuring decay curves of the intensity of the Balmer emission of the excitedhydrogen atom H'(n=4). The azimuthal quantum number (.5, 77, d) distributions ofH'(n=4) were obtained by a time-resolved single-photon counting method. Thedistribution (%) for methane is H'(4,sx):H'(47t):H'(2lV)=42f4:4:11:51811 at theelectron energy of 25-300 eV, and that for water is H'(4,s):H'(4p):H'(4V)27:5:15:11:55811 at 23-300eV. The emission cross sections of each sublevelwere obtained at 35, 50, 100 and 300 eV.[electron collision, dissociation, emission cross section, azimuthal quantum ll number distribution, methane, waterl
