A modified spin-wave theory is developed for the square??lattice antiferromagnetunder the constraint that the sublattice magnetization vanishes. This constraint givesrise to a highly anisotropic susceptibility. The rotationally avcraged susceptibility in-creases linear in temperature from its T= 0 value which is eq ual to the average suscep-tibility at T= 0, 2 /3 z., obtained by the usual spin-wave theory. The free energy andspecific heat remain essentially unchanged from those obtained by the usual spin-WQVC th((>?y.
