Layered Polls models on a square lattice where ferromagnetic and antifer-romagnetic bonds are regularly disposed are studied by means of an interfacemethod, analytically and employing Monte Carlo simulations. They are classified intothree types depending on the arrangement of bonds and the number of Polls spinstates, qw frustrated (FR) models that have frustration, degenerate (DG) models thathave a high degree of degeneracy, and fitting models that have a unique ground stateapart from the trivial degeneracy. Both FR and DG models are shown to exhibitphase transitions due to entropy gains, as previously predicted. The q dependence ofthe interface tension and the critical temperature is clarified. We find that there arevery similar properties between FR models and the corresponding Ising models. Themodels with q>4 are suggested to undergo first order phase transitions.[Potts models, phase transitions, entropy gains, square lattices, interface ll method, Monte Carlo simulations, frustration, interface tension, specific heat. l
