The second order energy shifts of I.ss, 2s and 2p states of the polaron bound inthe Coulomb potential are evaluated by various approximate and "exact" nu-merical methods, proposed by many authors. The comparison of these resultsmakes clear the validity of the approximate methods. For the Is-2p transitionenergy in silver halides, there arc large discrepancies between the "exact" nu-merical resttlts and the approximate results of Bajaj and Clark ; the second orderperturbation theory does not yield so good agreement with the experiment aspreviously inferred from an approximate evaluation.
