The triplet self-trapped excitons (STE) in liquid and solid rare gases are inves-tigated by means of absorption and luminescence spectroscopy under pulsedelectron beam excitation. Absorptions from 'I. state of molecular-type STE areobserved in Ne, Ar, and Kr, and an intense band in the near infrared region isascribed to the 'M.-+II. Rydberg type transition. In solid and liquid Ne, the3s-3p Rydberg transitions from 'P. state of atomic-type STE are found, in addi-tion to the molecular-type STE. The radiative lifetime of 'I. is also determined forAr and Kr from decay of the vacuum UV luminescence, and is found to agreewith that of the absorption from 'J.; the lifetimes are l.4li0.05gsec and0.09 .f. 0.005 gsec for solid Ar and Kr, respectively.
