For I -5 keV beams of C", 0" and S" ions passing through vapors of alkaliesCs, K and Na, the total cross sections o.. and o. . for the reactions of typesA"-LM->AIM" and AIM->A -l-M" (M: alkali atom) have been determinedby growth-curve method. The cross sections 410 and o. . obtained are of theorder of 10 -" and 10 " cm' with the largest values of l x 10 " and 2 x 10 "cm', respectively, and are about one order of magnitude as large as those forordinary gas targets. These cross section curves do not exhibit normal behaviorpredicted from values of energy defect AE at infinite nuclear separation probablydue to the interactions among some molecular states concerned. In particular,all the o.. curves have an oscillatory structure arising from quantum-mechanicalinterference between elastic and inelastic channels or between two inelasticChlflnels.
