Charge changing collisions leading to negative ion formation have been studiedfor H", C", 0" and S" ton beams passing through vapors of Cs, K and Na.Collision cell method is used, and the energy ranzge studied is from 0.5 keV to 5.0keV. Fractions of outgoing particles in three charge states l, 0 and - ] have beendetermined as a fttnction of target atom thickness II (atoms/cm') Except thehydrogen case, the fractions of negative ions at very thick targets are as high as53 to 95 '3 of the total beam. The maximum conver'sion cc>efficients of primarypositive tons into negatjve ions have also been determined. The result showsthat except the hydrogen case, cesium is the mc>st efficient target in the energyrange studied and converts 29'7$ of C" ions, 24?'3 of 0" ions and l5'll% of S"tons into negative Tons at the optimum energies a.nd If values.
