Two dimensional steady state laminar natural convectic>n and the effect oflocalized heating at various pressures and temperatures on flow patterns in arectangular channel is studied numerically. The governing equations for conserva-tion of mass, momentum, energy and equation of state for the problem arcsolved by using an explicit firuite difference schetne. All properties of the fluid, helium, are considered to be temperature dependent. The numerical resultsobtained with variable fluid properties differ remarkably from those with constantfluid properties. Flow patterns at the Rayleigh number greater than 1100 (pressure50 mm I-Ig) are found to be almost similar to those previously reported.
