Silver-doped KBr crystals are observed to have two pronounced absorption peaks at 6.24 and 6.53eV, named G_1 and G_2 respectively. The oscillator strengths of these bands are nearly constant over a range of room temperature to liquid helium temperature. Silver-doped KI crystals have corresponding peaks at 5.06 and 5.50eV. It is concluded that these bands are associated with the formation of a trapped exciton around a silver ion substituted at a cation site. The splitting into two peaks is interpreted as arising from spin-orbit interaction.
