An Investigation of the Dynamic Mechanical Properties of Glassy Polymers by the Composite Oscillator Method

The dynamic Young's modulus and loss factor are determined by the composite oscillator method for several glassy polymers: phenol resin, polymethyl methacrylate, polystyrene, nylon 6 and polyester, in the temperature from -70° to +90℃ at frequencies 50, 100 and 200kc/s. The loss factor curve of polymethyl methacrylate shows an anomaly at ca. -20℃ which is concluded to be due to the γ-transition, the activation energy being estimated as 7kcal/mole. The moisture dependence of this transition is also shown and the molecular process involved is hypothetically proposed. For polyethylene a peak of loss factor is observed at 10℃. A procedure to eliminate the false attenuation peaks observed in applying the composite oscillator method to high polymers is described.
