Generic forms of the initial conditions for a soliton equation in the Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur (AKNS) hierarchy which can be solved in terms of the hypergeometric function are presented. A detailed study on these conditions shows that the initial wave packets are generally consisted of only one pulse, and not symmetric around their peaks. The scattering problems associated with the initial conditions are also studied. The presented initial conditions yield a set of complete scattering data and expressions of soliton solutions explicitly.
