Statistical theruaaodynatnics of a spherical phantorn rnolectrle in a hard sphere fluid is studied.A phantom molecule has no interaction with solvent naolecules at the grotrnd state, but will havean interaction when excited. It is shown that the thertnodynarnical properties of the phantomraaolecule are closely related to the fltrctuation of the solvent molecules in a finite region. Rigorousexpressions are given at the snuall and large (continvxvrrn) lirnits. Therrnodynanaical propertiesof the phantozaa unolecule of an interrnediate size are detnonstrated by tusing a Nlonte Carlotechnique. The rnean field approximation is izavalid for a small johantotn nnolecule and/or at lowdensities, although that works xvell for a large phantorn molecttle at high densities.
