Self-Trapping of Excitons in PbI_2 Clusters Formed in Pb_<1-x>Cd_xI_2 Mixed Crystals

Luminescence of PbI3 clusters formed in Pb3 .Cd.Iz rnixed crystal has been investigatedin the range of Pb" coznposition between 20 mol% and 40 rnol%. The spectrum consists ofa band of free exciton luminescence near the absorption edge and a band with large Stokes-shift. Ternperattrre and excitation energy dependences of the spectra and decay profiles of theluminescence indicate that the low energy band originates frotm self-trapping of excitons in theclusters. Stability between the free and self-trapped exciton states is governed by the excitonband width which depends on the size of clusters.
