Anisotropy and temperature dependence of elastic constants of phenothiazinecrystal, which undergoes a ferroelastic phase transition at T.=24S.S K, were obtainedby ultrasonic velocity measurements. The characteristic anisotropy of this crystalagainst shear stress is suggested to have a relation to weak intermolecular hydrogenbonds extended along #-axis. A phenomenological analysis of free energy of thecrystal indicates that the novel temperature dependence exhibited by the elastic con-slant C.. arises from a coupling of the strain e. with the strain e. along which a softening is observed as the temperature approaches T.. Temperature dependence of thespontaneous deformation in the low-temperature phase and the entropy of transitionare qualitatively explained in terms of the above analysis.phase transition, ferroelasticity, molecular crystal, elastic constant
