We develop an asymptotic theory of nonlinear dispersive wave where the nonlinearSchr6dinger equation gives the leading order approximation. First, we define a nor-mal form and show that the normal form takes an integrable form up to first order, but not to second order. Then, we study the interaction of two solitary waves of thenormal form, and show that the interaction lead to the shift of soliton parameters.nonlinear Schr6dinger equation, normal form, soliton
