A theoretical study is made on the steady thermal convection of a viscous fluid con-fined in a vertically oriented thin toroidal loop which is placed in vertically uniformtemperature gradient. The Boussinesq approximation is employed, and first-order perturbed fields from steady heat conduction state are examined. Particular attention ispaid to the effect of asymmetry on the three-dimensional flow with four cells, whichexists at 12.890 times the critical Rayleigh number for the onset of convective flow. The expressions of the helical bi-directional flows are also given. These flows are cornpared with those observed recently in our experiment.
