Detailed patterns for entropy flows and entropy productions in the earth's surfaceand in the earth's atmosphere are theoretically investigated based on the energeticdata on the earth. Effects of diffuse reflection, scattering and beam-splitting of radia-tion and also of the grey-body nature of radiation emitted by the earth's surface andby the earth's atmosphere are taken into account. Net entropy flows into the atmosphere and into the earth's surface both become negative. Net entropy flows fromthe earth's surface to the atmosphere transported by infrared radiation, heat conduc-tion and evaporation of water are in the ratios 1.0:0.4: 1.4. The entropy production inthe atmosphere is 2236 [J - cm " yr ' I K '] and that at the earth's surface is 2064[J?cm '-yr '-K '].entropy flow, entropy production, earth's surface, atmosphere.
