Solid-Solid Phase Transition of Hexatriacontane (n-C_<36>H_<74>)

The solid-solid phase transition of hexatriacontane was investigated by X-r9ydiffraction and DSC thermal analyses. The results show that the crystalline c'-axisremains unchanged during the transition. In a high purity specimen, the originalmonoclinic crystal once changes to the vertical structure and then transformsto the high temperature monoclinic form, where the molecular chain changesits staggering direction by 90'. In a lower purity specimen, the original ortho-rhombic crystal also changes into the high temperature monoclinic form. Theinterlayer spacing calculated from the crystallin<l: structure shows that the hightemperature monoclinic form is advantageous for molecular rotation. Theirrcversibility of the solid-solid transition is due to defects in the crystal causedby the change of the staggering direction.
