The isotope effects of H. and Dz on the thermalization of epithermal electronsin gases are studied with the Monte Carlo simulation using the experimentalcross sections. The influence of the gas temperature T on the isotope effects isexamined at T : 300 K, 77 K [ N &.(Hz)], and 40 K [ - ?.(D.)], because the charac-teristic rotational temperature 0. corresponds to the rotational tlu'eshold. Theelectron velocity distribution deviates significantly from the local Maxwelldistribution (MD) in both H. and D.; consequently the degradation of theeffective electron temr>erature r. is stower than that obtained with the MDassumption. The electron thermalization time r.. when 7'./7':1.1 is larger thanthat for the MD to the extent of 290 '7; in D. at I: 40 K. The isotope effect ismost prominent for the pressure normalized thermalization time r..p at T=77K [r..p(D.)/o..p(H.)=0.35] because 0.(H.)>T>N.(D.). T. and r..p arecompared with those calculated from available experimental energy exchangerate coefficients.
