Anomalous Plasma Transport Due to Electron Temperature Gradient Instability

The collisionless drift'wave instability driven by an electron temperatureinhomogeneity (electron temperature gradient i?tstability) and the enhancedtransport processes associated with it are studied using a two-and-a-half dimen-sional particle simulation code. The simulation results show that quasilineardiffusion in phase space is an?important mechanism for the saturation of thisinstability. The instability yields particle fluxes tceward the hot plasma regions.The magnetic shear stabilizes the instability. However the heat conductivityof the electron temperature perpendicular to the ma.gnetic field, T.., is not reducedby the magnetic shear but remains high, whereae; the heat conductivity of theparallel temperature, T.j7, is effectively reduced.
