Production of plasma by a conical electrode plasma gun and its behaviour were studied by systematically changing the gas loading. The gun employs a low inductance power supply (total inductance: 80nH) and pulsive admission of gas into vacuum. The instantaneous gas loading given by a fastacting valve can be understood by the "valve chart" in which the average pressure p and the gas expansion delay time t are introduced as the most essential parameters. When t is small (t=180 μsec), the speed of ejected plasma is much larger than the pinching speed of the current shell inside the gun. This mechanism can be ascribed to the Munroe effct. The observed average energy of D+ ions were beyond 2 keV; a considerable amount of more energetic impurity ions were found.
