• X-rav scatterins from (Nl-[4)2BCF4 at temreratures near T-= 185 K has beennaeasured in order to elucidate the nature of the mechanism of the phase transi-tion. The intensitv of the surerlattice reflection at (1/2,0*6) decreases withincreasing teunperature and disappears at T-, indicating that the transition at T,.is of the second order. The diffuse intensity around (] /2, 0, 6).increases just aboveT,.. It is suggested that the transverse phonon polarized along the c-directionsoftens at k=?a' in (NH.).BeF. nnear T-.
