A ntolecular beamtt scattering apparatus has been set up for the study of totalcross section of alkali and alkali halide nvolecules scattered by different gases.The resolution of the apparatus is fairly high so that accurate correction forfinite resolution can be naade. The lshii-Nakayanta backstreanting effect of theMcLeod g8LlgC used for calibration purpose has been eliminated. The scatteringcross sections for Na atonc with Ar, 0., N., He and H. have been xvteasured. Therestmlts show the satisfactory perforxaaance of the apparattms. The cross sectionsobtained have been contpared with the theoretical values.
