The successive phase transition scheme in VRu alloy has been discussed based onGinzburg-Landau type phenomenological treatment. The intrinsic soft mode in thismaterial is assumed to be on the [110]-direction as usually happens in various bcc-based marten-sites. The particular incommensurate phase with an off-symmetricmodulation wave vector is characterized to be a 'partially incommensurate' (PIC)phase in which only one component of the wave vector of the intrinsic soft mode selec-tively locks into the commensurate value. Itis noticed that the partial lock-in is a char-acteristic feature of the multiple-Q state stabilization. Itis also noticed that due to thecoupling between the modulation waves and bulk strain, the PIC phase completelyoverrides the IC phase, whence the transition proceeds as N=PIC=C in consistentwith the experimental results.
