Neutron Scattering Study of Jahn-Teller Phase Transition in RbCuCl_3

In this letter we report on a neutron scattering investigation of the cooperativeJahn-Teller phase transition in RbCuCl.. We observed strong critical diffuse scatter-ing due to correlated fluctuations of J-T clusters. This is in sharp contrast to thepreviously reported scattering characteristics of CsCuCl. which undergoes similar J-Tphase transitions. In CsCuCl., no critical scattering was observed, however, strongHuang scattering around Bragg reflections was observed. These results indicate thatthe interactions which cause cooperative J-T phase transitions in these materials maybe substantiallv different.
