The Magnetohydrodynamic: (MHD) stability of a free bourtdary toroidal Z pinchplasma is investigated. Equilibrium field profiles are choscn so that 7t is nearlyuniform in the central region, p and dq /dr vanish on the b<cundary and Suydam'scriterion is satisfied throughout the plasma. The stability of tire equilibrium is examined for the ratio b of the conducting wall radius to the plasma radius and plasmapressure. The stability of non-resonant ideal modes is deterrrtined mainly from thesafty factor on the axis. Non-resonant modes are clominant fccr low plasma pressure, whereas resonant modes are dominant for high plasma pressutre. Tearung modes arestable only for b below 1.04. The width of the magnetic islax?ds produced from thetearing modes is evaluated. 7Vs b increases, overlap of the nnagnetic islands occursover a wide area in the plasrna.
