The fraction of ions trapped by a lamirtar magnetosonic shock wave is evaluatedtheoretically. The heating rate due to the resonant ion acceleration is then obtained interms of the Mach number and upstream plasma parameters. In addition, it is shownthat, in spite of the large positive potential in the shock region, a laminar shock canreflect some electrons, as well as ions, because of the magnetic mirror effect.
