In an attempt to evaluate the effect of taurine on fatigue, a double blind comparative study was performed by a cross-over method in winter, 1972. The study consisted of two experimental terms. In each terms, a certain group of people in the similar life environments was loaded by a nocturnal marching on the last day of the 7 days' medication term, and objectively investigated for the degree of fatigue. Medication was dispensed in identical-appearing capsules containing 500mg of taurine or placebo, with two capsules three times per day. The subjects were divided at random into two groups for the medication, one receiving taurine in the first term and placebo in the second term, and the other vice versa. The degree of fatigue was evaluated by means of Flicker Test, and each ten check items of (a), (b) and (c) from "Fatigue Scale of the Industrial Fatigue Research Comittee of Japan Industrial Health Association". In each term, fatigue was loaded on the 7th day by 8 hours' nocturnal marching, which was followed by 3 hours' napping time. Evaluation was done at 8 : 30 a.m. (iv, before work) and 6 : 00 p.m. (v, after usual daily work and before load) on the 7th day and 4 : 00 a.m. (vi, immediately after load) and 8 : 30 a.m. (vii, after napping) on the 8th day. The results are as follows : (1) The Flicker Test values at (iv, v, vi) show no significant difference between taurine and placebo groups, but the values at (vii) in placebo group are significantly higher than those in taurine group. (2) As compared with placebo group, taurine group shows significantly lower degree of subjective fatigue at (vi) in Fatigue Scale (b) and (c) and at (vii) in Fatigue Scale (b). After a short time rest following labor, a further decrease in the Flicker value and the accompanied increase in the subjective fatigue are usually observed. In this case, however, the subjective fatigue was improved with a normal change of the Flicker value, and this may be considered as a desirable state for recovery process of Fatigue.
