This thesis was to make a review on the studies of sport sociology in the past and to find out the future tasks and problems to be considered. The following aspects were indicated to be studied in future through this review: 1. It was so far agreed that the problems of sports came to be sociologically treated in 1890's, but even this general agreement needs to be re-assured more carefully aided by our future academic evidences. 2. It was in 1964 when the international study of the sport sociology was promoted among the researchers along with the initiation of the International Committee for Sociology of Sports in ICSPE, while that in Japan was after the foundation of Japanese Society of physical Education. 3. There are some areas rather far behind in research compared with others in sport sociology due to its short histoy, even though the hierarchy and divisions of this area of study has not been completed. It is, therefore, our future task to finalize the definition on these divisions with reference to those proposed by G. Luschen and our own of Japanese Research Division of Sport Sociology. 4. The most fit and appropriate research methods must be sought and established independent and characteristics from those of sociology pet se.
