Physical characters of dead wood samples, such as apparent density (ρ), water content (H), coefficient of desiccation (μ), solidity (s), and their interrelations under natural conditions were studied in the evergreen oak forests of Japan. The water content (H) was fairly stable throughout the year, but its mean value and variance increased with the decrease of ρ. The wet weight of the samples tended to decrease exponentially due to desiccation, and the relative rate of desiccation on an exponential basis (μ) was greater in the samples with smaller values of ρ. The H-ρ relation was hyperboli, while the μ-ρ regression was linear. A positive correlation was found between ρ and the solidity (s) determined by Yamanaka's solidity meter. The importance of ρ as the most influencial factor in the process of wood decomposition was suggessted.
