The purpose of the present study is to clarify the diurnal activities of the blue-green alga, Microcystis aeruginosa, corresponding to the natural day-night cycle, and to analyze the phenomena of water bloom of this alga with regard to the life cycle of the algal cells. Diurnal chages in photosynthetic and respiratory activities were investigated with the nutrient concentration in the field observation at Lake Suwa and indoor experiments. Particular analogous mode of the diurnal changes were recognized in both photosynthetic and respiratory activities, exhibiting two peaks of these activities in the morning and afternoon, and one of minima at pear midday in a day. On the other hand, the ratio of cell number of M.. aeruginosa to particulate organic nitrogen gradually increased in the morning and reached the maximum at near midday, being two or three times as great as the ration in the evening in the evening in the lake. It may be suggested that the diurnal changes of these activities are concerned with the cell division of this alga.
